Food Allergy Bullying

Child psychologist Clair Mellentin helps parents understand how they can help their kids with food allergies.
1- Parents often feel “bullied” by others when advocating for their  child & their allergy issues (examples: airlines, other adults not believing/understanding severity).

2- Kids are teased/bullied “I’m going to touch you with peanuts” by peers not understanding consequences. This is usually not considered bullying by schools but can have the same emotional consequences for the victim.

3- Tips for parents:  always advocate and educate teachers & adults about your child’s allergy. Be open & honest with your child about what their risks are and potential consequences if they eat or are around food they are allergic to. Regularly check in with your child about their fears and feelings  about their allergy.
