The Holiday Blues

The holidays can be a joyous time, but for some it can increase feelings of depression and loneliness.  It is not uncommon for people- both adults and kids alike- to experience some level of depression and/or anxiety during the month of December.  This is especially true for those who do not have a “Hallmark” family or the financial means for a material Christmas or Hanukkah.

Warning signs of depression:

  • withdrawal
  • increased sleep/low motivation
  • crying spells
  • increased appetite or lack of appetite
  • body aches and pains
  • feelings of sadness that persist
  • anger and aggression

It is important to talk about your feelings to someone you trust. A valuable resource is also available through the Suicide Prevention Hotline (800) 273-8255.  The Trevor Project is also an incredible resource for LGBT young adults who are experiencing suicidal thoughts.
